Documenting the Beauty of Birth
"There is a secret in our culture, and it’s not that birth is painful. It’s that women are strong.”
-Laura Stavoe Harm
"I wanted to photograph what I knew was going to be my last birthing experience, after having three babies beforehand. If you have birthed before, you will know that birthing requires everything we have, so the little things go unnoticed.
My wish was to be able to look back and see my children’s faces, feel them again, remember how their tender touch felt, see how strong my husband's hands held me, and see the awe in their faces during the arrival of our last baby.
I wanted someone that could be there but hardly there if you know what I mean. Karaena has that ability, she is able to take amazing photos while being hardly noticed during the process. The results were beyond any imagined outcome. She captured the absolute essence of every being present and of the birth in itself.
My husband who was very reluctant to have a camera in the room as he thought it would be invasive, is deeply grateful for me insisting on the idea and we cry looking through the photos every time we flick through the pages of Enzo’s birthing album, an absolute treasure we will always cherish.
Karaena is professional, compassionate, patient and so respectful. Her calming presence is an asset to any birthing situation and her ability to capture what she does is simply incredible. I would recommend her as a birthing photographer to anyone thinking of getting their birth photographed. And if you are not thinking about it, I urge you to consider it, as you will forever thank yourself for doing it."

What to Expect from me as your birth photographer
We'll have a chat about what you expect from birth photography with me as your photographer. This is best in person but if you would prefer a phone call that's totally ok too.
I'll want to know your due date. I'll be on call for you from 38 weeks until your baby is born. I'll ask for details about where you are intending on giving birth. (Home, birthing center, or hospital)
If we agree it feels right for us both to work together, I'll send you a contract to sign and book in your due date.
Consult after you've reached the end of your 1st trimester.
We meet up and get to know each other more. It's important that you have a chance to discuss your birth plan with me and ask me any extra questions you may have about birth photography.
This is also when your $500 deposit is due.
Email me any time
I'll be available by email anytime up until 38 weeks.
I'd love to know how your pregnancy is going and if there are any changes to your birth plan.
38 weeks pregnant
I'll get in touch with you! This is an exciting time as you near your due date. From 38 weeks onwards I will be on call for you. Let me know by phone when you begin to go into labour!
Once established labour is confirmed I'll need you or your birth partner to give me a phone call. Then I'll be driving to you to begin documenting your Birth Story!
Professional Birth Photographer
I live in Nelson/Tasman with my 3 girls, 2 bonus children and my endlessly patient, tech support, ridiculously handsome partner Dhillon.
My hope is that women feel empowered with imagery of birthing their children, that they can see how strong they are & look back on their pictures with pride & belief in themselves.
To be trusted to enter a woman's birth space is a huge honour.
I am always so in awe of each woman's strength and courage.
I combine artistic and technical skill with a careful, respectful & unobtrusive presence.
I believe every woman deserves incredible photos of her most powerful and vulnerable moments
